State Senate  District 27

My "tenacious" mentality was molded  by my WWII Veteran Grandfather who taught me that no matter how tough things get, you cannot give up in the face of adversity. As I've gone through life, I've held onto this thinking as obstacle after obstacle have appeared and as I've fought to make my community a better place.

My time as an elected official has been nothing short of a privilege. I was first elected to the State House of Representatives in 1995 at the age of 27, making me one of the youngest to ever be elected. From the onset, my priorities have always to craft meaningful legislation that focuses to fund education in our state, increase access to healthcare options, and create a business atmosphere that protects our working families.

Through hard work and commitment to Democratic principles, I was elected by my colleagues to represent them as the House Minority Leader in 2016.

Now, after just finishing my first term as a State Senator for the good people of LD 27, I am eager and hungry to build upon the foundation which has been laid. There is still much work to accomplish and I am ready to be the champion for South Phoenix, Laveen, and Guadalupe.

Arizona still has one of the worst funded education systems in the entire country at a ranking of 45th. Not only are we last in funding, but Republicans continue wanting to privitize education by expanding school vouchers and only supporting schools in affluent areas.

As your elected State Senator, I am fighting to rollback education funding cuts in order to ensure that we not only raise educator pay, but also provide a world class education for our children. Read More

In the age of COVID-19, we've seen what a dysfunctional legislature can cause by rushing our state to reopen amidst increasing cases of people infected with this deadly disease and more people dying each day. Instead of pulling resources to help our communities from Arizona's Rainy Day Fund, Republicans in the legislature prefer to not only force people back into work, but constantly attack our states medicaid systems and social services systems.

I continue to fight for my community and Arizonans healthcare because it's important for people to have the right to be healthy and safe in our state. I will continue to champion increased funding and access to healthcare for all Arizona families! Read More

Our once thriving economy has suffered the worst consequences from the COVID-19 epidemic and has now spiraled out into a state of disrepair. Instead of investing in educational programs or workforce development to attract established businesses, the GOP controlled legislature decided to cut taxes instead. Now, we are left to deal with the consequences of their inaction and find creative solutions to stabilize and repair our local economy.

As your State Senator, I will continue my fight to create a variety of new industries in our state so that our economic backbone will never be broken again. We need new economic drivers and constituents who are ready to take those high paying jobs. Read More
